The Creative Process

First, I have to find a subject that is interesting and this can take a while because not every building or scene appeals to me.  When I finally find something I like, I have to decide how to fit the scene on my canvas. The biggest problem in picking out a subject on location is that there is too much information.  Looking through my camera helps me to decide what point of view I want to draw from and how to crop the subject.

I like to draw on sunny days so there is a lot of contrast between the light and shadow areas.  It takes about an hour and a half to make the initial drawing. I usually take a few photographs to paint from in case I don’t finish the painting outside.

I never complete an urban landscape painting in one setting.  I generally paint in 2 or 3 hour sessions and most paintings take 3 or 4 sessions spread over a couple of weeks to finish.  I usually paint in my home studio, at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center or outside during the summer. This painting of the Mohawk Restaurant in German Village took about 17 hours to complete.

Creating a work of art is a true joy for me and every time I finish a painting it feels like something magic has happened.  It is my pleasure to share my paintings with others.
